The project consists of new construction of a 550 Sq. Ft. studio space above a 2 car garage. The ground floor is constructed of 8” CMU with a steel beam header at the oversized garage door. A small workshop is also located at the garage level.
A custom steel staircase was welded in place, built with mechanically fastened wooden steps and stainless steel cabling. Conventional wood framing above is wrapped by aluminum composite panels, designed and installed by The Future Primitive. Fabrication was done by C.R. Laurence at thier manufacturing facility in Vernon, CA.
The project allowed for experimentaion with fabrication techniques and materials. A combination of detailing and fabrication expertise, a knowledge of available raw materials along with installation experience allowed for a distinct and dynamic design within a small construction budget.
Canela Cocina Latina
Canela Cocina Latina is a remodel of an existing restaurant in Venice, California. I worked with the client to develop design and identity concepts for the project based on her request that the restaurant reflect a traditional Mexican / Central American aesthetic, while creating a light modern atmosphere on a small budget. I created illustrations to assist in budgeting for construction and to show possible configurations for artwork and seating.
The overall color scheme is based on textile that the client found on a trip to Guatemala. The same textile will be used as the backing for the long bench seating along the East wall of the restaurant.
Northridge Guest House
The Northridge Guest House consists of a 1,000 sq. ft. accessory house to be located behind an existing, two story single family residence. The project will be installed with a grey water system and a rain water collection tank. Solar panels will provide a majority of the energy requirements.
